While much — way too much — is being made of the political leanings of yesterday’s Alexandria shooter by those who seek to capitalize on a national tragedy by engaging in their own brand of ‘identity politics’….
While NBC prepares to prominently air the cynical ravings of a loathsome alt-white conspiracy theorist because his vile, self-promoting filth is “relevant”….
While the occupant of the office that once represented leadership of the free world sullenly refuses to acknowledge Pride Month, and wonders aloud whether perhaps Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) should forego federal funding….
While we as a nation enter Day 2 of the mandatory 4.3 billion year ‘cooling off period’ that follows every white-on-white mass shooting, because “it’s not the right time to discuss gun control”….
While the cheap cliche of “thoughts and prayers” once more substitutes for action and leadership….
….Guess what it reallytook to stop a bad guy with a gun?
N.C. Central interim chancellor Johnson O. Akinleye said in a statement Wednesday that [….] “we are especially proud of our Eagle hero, [North Carolina Central University — an HBCU] alumnus and U.S. Capitol Police Officer David J. Bailey, who was part of the congressional security detail and bravely put his life on the line to protect and serve the community.”
The first couple also met with Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner and her wife.
That’s right. It took two dedicated, courageous, inspiring Americans who, just coincidentally, happened to be unwitting representatives of the changing face of America that so many today would deny. Two selfless individuals who placed their personal well-being beneath the good of the many, without thinking twice, because it was the right thing to do. Two servants of the American people who did their jobs, and did them well.
Perhaps, tomorrow, some much better-known servants of the American people will find in these heroes, officers Bailey and Griner, the inspiration and the courage to start doing their jobs, too.
These inspiring Americans don’t need your goddamn thoughts and prayers. Rather, we need theirs.
